The trailer for fame starts off with pictures of the istitutions that funded the movie. The first shot that we see is a mid shot of someone slightly out of frame and a spotlight which is the normal convention of a dance movie because dancers want to be in the spotlight, the spotlight represents the characters dreams. Then there is an indence in which it says 'it all begins with a dream'. The idea of dreams tend to always be mentioned in dance movies.
Then from there we get a shot of a girl who is meant to be one of the dream follower. The first frame of her is a close up of her hands playing the piano in which is her talent also aswell as her singing which is the diagetic sound we hear. During the first 35 seconds of the trailer there are short cuts between each frames and it uses a couple of fade ins. The sound is syncronus to the editing, as the sound is slow a melodic the cuts are also slow.
Also the first 35 seconds of the trailer uses mid shots, as the main focus of it is the girl and piano, because the main plot to the movie is the talent.
There then is a pause and the non diegetic song kicks in and it is slow and melodic also, with a series of mid shots of The trailer uses a couple of indences which is common in most dance movies trailers. Then there is fast cuts between mid shots of the main characters faces. The music then gets quieter and we see a spotlight close, which is symbolic to losing dreams.
Then the music kicks in and its louder and at a faster pace, the music in syncronus to the image on the screen, the takes between each shot get quicker, the shots are of people's different talents, such as singers and dancers.
The trailer ends with fast cuts between the shots as the trailer is coming to an climaxing end, this could be foreshadowing that there is a climatic ending to the movie, also with long shots this is to get all the talent into the trailer to build up peoples excitement.
The trailer also ends with its narrative of dreams and being in big lights, the last couple of shots of the trailer are images from the movie in light bulbs which origonally light the end title FAME, in different coloured lights, I think this is done to end the trailer with fun and excitement and also inspiration to the viewers.
This trailer and also many other dance trailers tend to use zooms and pans, this is so that they are able to follow the movement. Also compared to romantic movies this trailer and also dance trailers tend to use mid shots and also long shots, this is because there is a lot to be seen in a frame.
In dance movies mis-en-scene is very important as it is mainly based on dance its hard to get out the narrative through.
Most dance trailers tend to use a lot of shots, i think that this is done to add alot of the dancing into the trailer to grab the audiences attention, also thats why the takes are much quicker.
I think that what the trailer of fame is trying to represent is the idea of people following their dreams, we see a lot of this with the idea people being in the spotlight which is shown throughout the whole trailer, Even with one shot being the spotlight closing. This could represent that in the movie the dreams are not going to be to easy to reach.
Also in the trailer there are lots of shots dedicated to showing the different talents, this could be done so that the trailer can reach out to a wider target group and so that the movie doesn't seem bias to one talent.
I think that the target audience is peformers or anyone who inspires to be performers. The magority of the target audience is probarly females, as most of the trailer is dominated by a female character from the movie. Also from the clips of potential romance in the movie.
Also as fame is a musical from the 80's, so the target audience could also be fans from the origonal musical.
In dance movies the probs and setting play an important as it helps the narrative of the movie go through. In the trailer for fame we see that it is based and in a performing arts school, we see thats at 42 seconds into the trailer there is a low angle shot of the people come out of classes, they are carrying back packs which is a prop used to show that these people are in education. Also at 44 seconds there is a mid shot of one of the classes which is a dance class.
During the first 35 seconds of the trailer the the prop and setting plays a big part in setting the tone of the movie. The obvious prop is the pianio which the girl is playing and also the setting is the stage in which she is playing on. This is showing us the narrative of the movie from the begin of the trailer.
The costume in this trailer is vital for engaging the target audience which i believe to be girls. The costumes start of suttle which is syncronus to the narrative of the trailer. The main costumes that are used in the trailer are dance wear and also normal clothing, this is done so that the target audience can relate to the movie. As the trailers increases in pace we see more big loud costumes.
Ive decided that in my trailer i want most of it to be dominated by dancing, but also some shots with dialogue to move the narrative forward. Also ive decided to base some shots on the concept of spotlights as my trailer is also going to based on people following their dreams. In the trailer for fame the narrative doesn't come through that much (the romantic element) i feel with longer takes i can show the narrative well.
